Typically many companies start off with two or more standalone
desktops. These are then subsequently networked together into a
simple peer-to-peer network. The next step, usually caused by business
growth and the increased exploitation of IT, is when the company
installs a central server to be used as the database, internet and
email provider for the desktops connected to it. Further growth
can involve multiple servers connected to each other on the same
site, or across multiple sites. The network requirements for each
of these network types are different but a network should be designed
at the outset to enable growth and upgrading from one type to another
with minimal disruption and cost. OnTrack Systems have designed,
installed and supported networks at our customers which range from
simple peer-to-peer networks to networks encompassing 3 or more
geographically dispersed locations each with its own server connected
to a common network.
Our approach to network design is to determine the network components
and connections required to support the desired business capabilities
and structure. Once the the client's business and user or application
IT objectives are determined the network requirements can be expressed
in the following terms:
• Access
• Availability (including performance & capacity)
• Resilience
• Value - business value
• Specific application and business process
The following areas are subsequently developed and validated:
• Network functionality - Connectivity, Management, Security,
Schedule, Skills / Training
• Vendor Architectures - Design, Protocols, Internetworking
Standards, Topology
• Vendor Technologies - Standards, Products, Network Services
